This major does not remain within the usual engineering technologies. We aim to establish a scientific base to construct a safe and sustainable society, co-existing with nature through theoretical, methodological education and research that are applicable to wider social fields. One of the educational goals is to encourage people to create the infrastructures that will answer the demand in new era. They will learn professional techniques related to designing, constructing, measuring, managing, and keeping the goal in sight for creating an environmental society (infrastructures and its surrounding environment). Another objective is to cultivate students which could consider the challenges for a symbiotic coexistence in a society between people and nature, and people with people, with various view points. These people will be able to discover conditions for sustainable society and also learn to predict the society and assessment methods required for problem solving. The above major goals are apprehended through education research in three fields and one special course listed below.

Civil and environmental engineering field

• Conduct basic research and develop technologies related to maintaining and preserving infrastructures required for constructing a safe and sustainable society that could coexist with the environment.

Built environment engineering field

• Conduct basic research and develop technologies related to natural function development by combining several engineering fields.

Environmental society assessment field

• Predict the outcome of policies, measures, plans and develop assessment methods that could contribute to realizing a sustainable society

• Develop integrated scientific technologies for river basin management and develop methods that will apply to conditions unique to each river basin

• Water resource management, Earth water environment monitoring, tropical hydrology and water resource*
• Functional analysis of plant component and its transformation utilization technology
• Exploration in industrial microbes and breeding for industrial microbial strains, as well as analysis on its genetic characteristics
• Application of economical and psycological transportation behavioral analysis methods for transportation planning

• Minor amount pollutant behavior/nanoengineering/ecosystem analysis/life systems and human society
• City space design/city management governance/policy assessment
• Environmental information acquisition and its usage/energy supply-demand system/complex system analysis
