Learn a state-of-the-art biotechnology to provide solutions to problems in modern society

In the department of biotechnology, our objective is to bring up the following types of people: people with broad special knowledge to locate problems to be solved by biotechnology with their own effort and have the ability to solve the problems by their advanced creativity.

Specifically, we focus on plants, animals, and microorganisms as research targets; study their diversified structures and functions using biotechnological method; foster the ability to apply the useful functions discovered in the analysis to develop solutions for the technical problems (such as environment, food, health, and medical service) which modern society is suffering in. We also educate bioethics inevitable for creating technology that is in harmony with the natural environment. In order to bring up such students, our department has a unique education with two major courses linked organically.

Bio-Function Analysis Large Course

This course will educate biological resources, targeting at microorganism, plants and animals, searching for new biological resources, diversified structures and functions from the aspect of bio-material chemistry, biochemistry, genetic engineering, cell engineering and so on. Professional education and research to utilize genetic information and functions is also provided.

Bio-Function Engineering Large Course

This course produce useful organisms and develops useful functions using biotechnological methods from genetic information resources and functional resources that organisms possess. Furthermore, the education and research are conducted to create technologies that are harmonious with the Earth’s environment and technologies related to energy, environment conservation, food production, health improvement, anti-aging, food safety, regeneration medicine and so on.

Additionally, Master programs and PhD programs are prepared for people who want to continue to further on in their study or research after graduation. Many graduates proceed to graduate schools to deepen their research as well as improve their professional skills. Major occupations where graduates accepted are companies related to food (food processing, beverages, brewage), medicine (medicine manufacturer, testing), chemical (cosmetics, flavors, fragrances), and environment (waste water treatment, environment analysis), civil services, and educational institutions. As the social environment accelerates to become a recycling society, it is inevitable to commit to recycling. The demand for people with understandings in biosystem is increasing in many industries.
